Laser Hair Removal FAQ

What it is. How it works. How to prepare.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target the hair follicle and reduce future growth. The laser detects pigment in the hair, gently heats the follicle, and slows or stops the hair from returning.

How does it work?

The laser emits a controlled pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This energy travels down the hair shaft and into the follicle, disrupting the growth cycle. Over a series of treatments, the hair becomes finer, lighter, and grows back more slowly.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, warm “snap” that fades quickly. Sensitivity varies by person and treatment area. Temporary warmth, redness, or swelling may occur after treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only treat follicles in the active growth phase — which is why multiple sessions are needed.

Your session count and spacing are personalized at consultation. Some areas need longer intervals or additional sessions, and maintenance may be needed.

Who is a good candidate?

Laser hair removal works well on a wide range of skin tones and hair types when the hair contains pigment. It does not work on very light blonde, red, white, or grey hair, as these shades lack the pigment the laser needs.

During your consultation, we review your skin, hair, medical history, and medications to assess whether laser is suitable for you and discuss expected results and possible risks.

What areas can be treated?

Depending on your skin, hair, and individual assessment, treatment areas may include:

  • Face (lip, chin, cheeks, jawline)
  • Beard area
  • Underarms
  • Bikini & Brazilian
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Stomach
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Hair around the areola — individual assessment required

This list does not confirm that every area is suitable or available to book. Your laser technician can confirm whether your area of concern can be treated. Laser is not used over tattoos or on the eyelids, eyebrows, or surrounding eye area.

Is there any downtime?

There is usually no downtime from routine, non-strenuous activities. Temporary pinkness, warmth, or swelling may appear. You will still need to follow the aftercare guidance below, including limits on heat, sweating, exercise, and sun exposure.

What should I do before my appointment?
  • Shave the area the day before or the morning of your appointment.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) for 2 weeks.
  • Pause topical retinoids, acids, and exfoliants on the treatment area for 7 days prior, unless your treating clinician gives different instructions.
  • List all medications you are currently taking — some can make the skin photosensitive.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams.
  • Arrive with clean skin: no lotions, deodorant, makeup, or oils.

These are general preparation guidelines; your consultation may change the timing. Do not stop prescription medication or a prescribed skin treatment without advice from its prescriber.

What should I do after my appointment?
  • Avoid heat, sweating, and exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Pause topical retinoids, acids, and exfoliants on the treated area for 7 days after treatment, or as advised by your treating clinician.
  • Keep the area clean and dry — no heavy lotions, oils, or deodorant for 24 hours.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams between sessions.
  • A cool compress, or a soothing product recommended by your treating clinician, may be used if the skin feels warm.

Follow your personalized aftercare instructions, especially if your skin is still irritated. Contact the office or your laser technician immediately if you develop blistering, severe pain, or worsening skin changes.
